Thanks for... enlightening. I, for one, did not know anything about Memorial Day. It just sounded natural. But now I know about the date and its meaning to folks somewhere else. People who passed away and especially soldiers are also commemorated here in Bulgaria and in other Orthodox countries I suppose on Archangel Michael's Souls Day, also called Soldiers'Souls Day which this year was on the 3rd of November. I shifts and is always on Saturday. Sorry the clumsy translation of those titles.
Well we can remember all year round really but it's always a special and emotional time of year to remind ourselves that war really is terrible (yet still happens).
Each country has their own unique take on memorial day and think it's important to continue the remembrance.

Thank you for sharing! I was just thinking about the differences in how Europe observes 11/11 versus the US....I went to school in Norway for the first two years of my High school, and I recall an entire segment of class dedicated to Remembrance day, a yearly school field trip for students to visit Flanders Field in Belgium, and poppies always being handed out, as well as reading various poems and such on the occasion. There was always an emphasis on WW1, that I recalled.
Now, maybe it's because I'm not in school anymore, or maybe it really is a cultural difference, but Veterans day in the US celebrates soldiers in general, and is accompanied with various "VETERANS DAY ONLY!" Sales at stores... I also don't see much poppy memorabilia, but maybe I'm just not as observant? I remembered when I was much younger in the states, there'd be poppies around memorial day... I don't know, just musings and my observations.
Thank you for sharing your experiences here too. Remembrance is such a significant thing here in the UK I don't think we will ever make it a commercial excuse for sales in shops.
It's not just world war I but because it's the centenary this year, that was the focus but it is for all soldiers and families too from all wars past and present.
Every country has their own take on it but it's important wherever you are to remember those who have made, and are making, the greatest sacrifice so we can live how we do today.

Wow, so we are celebrating on the same day! In Poland, we have Independence day on 11th of November, and tomorrow we'll celebrate the 100th anniversary. I've been living in UK for almost 5 years and never noticed that.
I didn't know that about Poland either! Yes if you wonder why loads of people start wearing poppies on their clothes or see them around, this is why 🙂

How big is your village Nicky? Losing 61 men from one place is quite a lot 😔
Nowadays it's around 9,000 residents but it was a lot smaller back then. Many farms and a lot more rural but I don't have an exact figure. I will see if there was any more information about it in the Village Hall.
I was pretty moved by some of the stories I read and how one family lost all 3 of their sons, one of which they never found the body. So they had to but memorials up in place. When the parents died, they were all buried together with the phrase "one day we'll know why" on the headstone. That was one of the last letters I read before leaving and I was too emotional to read more.
I always get emotional on remembrance weekend, hearing stories of how war impacted people.
