Last Sunday, June 29th, I woke up with a
craving for a delicious Afang soup. As a
busy teacher, my weekdays are always
packed, leaving me with only Saturdays
and Sundays to cook for the week. I
was determined to make the most of my
Sunday morning. I started my day early, completing my morning cleaning and refreshing routine before heading to the market.
The sun was shining bright as I walked through the bustling stalls, selecting the freshest ingredients for my Afang soup. I carefully picked out:
• Afang leaves
• Water leaves
• Dry fish
• Meat
• Periwinkle
• Kanda
• Palm oil, and a few other essentials.
As I returned home, I began preparing the
ingredients. I washed the Afang leaves
and dried them outside, taking in the warm
sunshine. Meanwhile, I started washing
and cutting the water leaves, squeezing
out the bitter taste. I also cleaned and cut
the periwinkle, washed the dry fish and
kanda, and set them aside.
Before I continued with the cooking, I took
a brief break to attend to my little boy,
Princewill, who had just woken up. I
quickly bathed him, brushed his teeth, and
gave him a light breakfast of tea and
biscuits to hold him over until our main
meal.
With Princewill settled, I returned to my
cooking. I expertly pounded the Afang
leaves in a mortar to release their flavor
and texture. Next, I added the ingredients
to the pot, carefully layering them to create
a rich and savory broth.
Finally, at 10:13 am, the Afang soup was
ready. I served it with a side of garri, and
Princewill and I sat down to enjoy our
delicious meal together. The flavors were
incredible, and we both relished every bite.
With our bellies full, I stored the remaining pot of soup in the fridge, looking forward to
enjoying it again later.
It was a wonderful Sunday morning, filled
with the joy of cooking and sharing a meal
with my loved one. As I reflected on our
simple yet satisfying breakfast, I felt
grateful for the opportunity to slow down
and appreciate the little things in life.
