I'm very sorry to hear it. I lost my dog, my companion, my friend a few years ago while traveling together thru Chile. It took me a lot of time to heal because it wasn't just the animal, it was a family member for me. It gets better though - each day is a bit easier than the previous. Time heals all the wounds.
