Review: White Ward - Love Exchange Failure [Doom Jazz/Black Metal; 9/10]

Wer schon einmal auf einem Konzert der Gruppe Bohren & The Club of Gore war, wird festgestellt haben, dass die meisten der Besucher so aussehen, als seien sie sonst auf Metal- oder Gothic-Konzerten zuhause. Von daher liegt es nahe, dass sich der durchschnittliche Bohren Fan über ein Album freuen wird, das den Doom Jazz der Mülheimer mit Black Metal kombiniert. 

Mit Love Exchange Failure veröffentlichen die Ukrainer von White Ward bereits ihr zweites Album, das sich musikalisch nahtlos an den Vorgänger Futility Report anknüpft. Was die Gruppe besonders auszeichnet, ist die Brillianz, mit der sie die beiden unterschiedlichen Musikrichtungen kombinieren, ohne dabei die eine als bloßen Anhang zur jeweils anderen an Bedeutung verlieren zu lassen.   

Der Anteil an Black Metal auf diesem Album zeigt sich vielseitig und kann unterschiedliche Formen annehmen. Mal tritt er mit roher Härte auf, ein anderes Mal in Gestalt von modernem Post Black oder Blackgaze und im nächsten Lied deutlich atmosphärischer und fast schon episch.   

Großstadt-Bohren statt schaurigem Landhaus 

Die ersten vier Minuten gibt sich das Album betont un-metallisch und baut dadurch eine Stimmung auf, die für den Rest des Hörerlebnis bestimmend bleibt, egal wie hart es im weiteren Verlauf ncoh werden soll. Die nächtliche Großstadt, die durch die Polizeisirenen dargestellt wird, erhält durch das Saxophon und die langsamen Klavierklänge eine melancholische Atmosphäre.   

Lyrisch wird diese Atmosphäre auch bestätigt, da Verbrechen geschildert werden, die integraler Bestandteil einer nächtlichen Großstadt sind. Eingebettet werden diese Vorgänge in die Erkenntnis, dass die Dinge weniger Bedeutung haben, als ihnen gemeinhin zugesprochen wird.  

Low, we sink / High, we fly / Every time / We fail 

Fazit: White Ward kombinieren zwei Genres, die wie für einander geschaffen sind: Doom Jazz und Black Metal. Auch die Texte fügen sich nahtlos in die Klangwelt ein, die durch diese Kombination geschaffen wird.

Anyone who has ever been to a concert of the group Bohren & The Club of Gore will have noticed that most of the fans look as if they are usually at home at metal or gothic concerts. So it's only natural that the average Bohren fan will be delighted with an album that combines Mülheim's Doom Jazz with Black Metal. 

With Love Exchange Failure, the Ukrainians from White Ward are already releasing their second album, which musically ties in seamlessly with their predecessor Futility Report. What sets the group apart is the brilliance with which they combine the two different musical styles without losing the importance of one as a mere appendage to the other.   

The share of Black Metal on this album is versatile and can take different forms. Sometimes he appears with raw harshness, sometimes in the form of modern Post Black or Blackgaze and in the next song clearly more atmospheric and almost epic.   

Big city Bohren instead of scary country house 

The first four minutes the album is emphatically un-metallic and thus builds up a mood that remains decisive for the rest of the listening experience, no matter how hard it should become ncoh in the further course. The nocturnal metropolis, represented by the police sirens, is given a melancholic atmosphere by the saxophone and the slow piano sounds.   

Lyrically this atmosphere is also confirmed, since crimes are described, which are integral component of a nocturnal metropolis. These events are embedded in the realization that things have less meaning than is commonly attributed to them.

Conclusion: White Ward combine two genres that are created for each other: Doom Jazz and Black Metal. Also the lyrics fit seamlessly into the sound world created by this combination.
