Is an old city located in the West Bank, near the Jordan River, in Palestine. The archaeological findings of this Canaanite city show that it was built more than ten thousand years ago. Its original inhabitants were the Canaanites. Jericho is mentioned in the biblical texts and located on the banks of the Jordan River, located at the bottom of the slope that leads to the mountainous plateau of Judah, about 8 km from the northern coast of the dry Dead Sea basin, almost 240 m below the level of the Mediterranean Sea and approximately 27 km from Jerusalem. It was an important city in the Jordan Valley (Dt. 34: 1, 3), on the west bank of the river. At one time, the city was known as the city of palm trees (Deut 34: 3, Judges 3:13); the first mention in the Scriptures is given in relation to the camp of the Israelites in Shittim (Numbers 22: 1, 26: 3).

In the Judeo-Christian tradition, the city is known as the place where the Israelites returned from slavery in Egypt, led by Joshua, the successor of Moses.

For 400 years it was part of the Ottoman Empire until 1917, then under the British Mandate of Palestine, passing under Jordanian control between 1948 and 1967 and then conquered by Israel during the Six-Day War, remaining since then under Israeli military occupation. Since 1994, after the Oslo Accords, it came under the administration of the Palestinian Authority.
