Gloomy Day Street Shots in Silvertone
It’s rainy days in Los Angeles.
But even though life centers around the pacific coast, we are a dry people.
We lose all sense of equilibrium when the sky opens up.
We become shadows and move like liquid through the mist.
We seek refuge in spaces made of glass and light.
Biding our time until the return of the sun.

Some beautiful shots.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Yesss - places with a lot of backlight make for amazing photo opportunities! I have one of those places in my city too and love to just sit there and watch - and then shoot a few of course ;-)
Living in SoCal, I also have the pacific coast at sunset. Sometimes I forget how lucky I am. But of course as photographers, we sniff these places out, don’t we?😉
Much needed on a gloomy day like today.
Right? Of course, I’m from Chicago. And I actually love me a good rainy day. Don’t tell anyone. I don’t want to be exiled. 😉
I wont. enough of that going on!
Ugh...so true.
Powerful and expressive, especially since we don't see their facial features. It could be any of us :)
I love the first picture...pure soulfulness.
Thank you, @szuri! I was going for anonymity and fluidity. Trying to capture the disconcerting other-worldliness that’s felt here when there’s any sort of weather. What’s commonplace most everywhere else can seem alien here. Even if - like me - you’ve lived plenty of places with a broad range of meteorology.
How that for a pretentious explanation? 😄 But it’s actually true.
Awesome photos :) but that second to last one is just stunning to me.
Thank you! I was actually trying to photograph the hallway. It used to be a Nordstrom’s and it’s kind of surreal. The guy photobombed me. Of course I’m super happy that he did. It worked out perfectly.
I'm so glad he photobombed you.....he's needed .....great shots Lisa! Love all the shiny floors and shadows....and silvery shimmer and your words.
Thanks, Deb! And thanks for the resteem 🙏🏻
Definitely would not have been the same without the guy.
I’m all about living creatures in my photos. I honestly didn’t think I’d get one there. It’s pretty desolate and abandoned and while some people do still use it as a hallway in this dying mall, it’s rare and random. So I totally feel like I lucked out.
Most of these shots were taken on an inside walking bridge which connects two sides of this old mall over a busy street. It’s been my rut-busting go-to place for years. It has the perfect storm of light and shadow and reflection and drama.
But the mall is closing. All the big stores are gone as well as over 1/2 of the smaller ones. There are many rumors swirling around about its fate. And I’ve been really sad about it because one of my favorite spots seems to be going away.
In fact the last few times I’ve gone, it’s been a ghost bridge. I’d decided to do a post with some of my award-winning photos taken there. It’s been a fertile ground for me. And so I went there on Friday specifically to get a few shots of the desolation for contrast and context.
Unfortunately - but really most fortunately! - it was not a barren wasteland and so my story changed dramatically.
I’ll still do a retrospect of my archived work created there in the near future.
*Funny sidenote: Whenever I try to drag one of my photographer friends to this mall for a photo shoot, I’m met with dubious grunts and disbelief. I’m baffled by that. I don’t know how anyone claiming to be a photographer and having been to this place could not have seen the magic there.
I hate it for you that your muse going away. I really couldn't tell you when the last time I went to the mall was. When I was a kid we went all the time. Now I try to avoid them.
Oh this is the main reason I go. I never shop there. And my muse comes and goes...like all muses. And to be honest, I think that’s a good thing. If my muse was always with me and operating at maximum capacity, I’d not have the proper reverence and appreciation.
Such great insight! Wonderful photos!
Thank you 😊
