A poor woman rummaged through the back shelves of a run down country store searching for something she could use as a paperweight. After finding a beautiful piece of burl wood, she approached the owner and asked the price.
“Let me see”, the owner replied, placing the piece of wood on the counter. “Well, it’s nearly a pound, i guess that’ll be a dollar”.
When the woman handed him the dollar, the owner said, isn’t it funny- that small piece of wood is only worth a dollar. But just think, if you carved it into a chess piece that worthless piece of wood would be worth ten times as much! As a matter of fact, he added, “if that same piece of wood were made into a carved jewellery box, its value would increase another tenfold.
“But most important, “he said, “if you took this piece of wood and created a holy cross, the type used by the minister of a church, why, ma’am, your worthless paperweight would indeed be priceless. “He said, isn’t it incredible for some to think that our creator would want them lying in the scrap heap of life? Each of us desperately needs to find ways in which we can be moulded and shaped into something more useful. No one ever fails who does his best.
Unfortunately, many view life as a train they board without knowing the itinerary or final destination. Herded like cattle, these passengers take their seats, draw the shades, and close off all faith and any hope for success. So many of us think ourselves into inferiority. We are held back by too much caution. We are timid about venturing. And so we die before we reach middle age, although we will not be lowered into the ground until our bodies catch up with our minds. What happened to the grand dreams of our youth? Struck down by our own caution, our own lack of faith. Opportunities? There were many. But there was always risk. Do we dare? No. We vacillate to and fro. Time beats on and the opportunities are gone. Like a train going nowhere fast, we plod along, giving little thought to rhyme and reason.
But there is a better way! George Elliot wrote over the door of her study, “it’s never too late to become the person you could have been”. Our moment of rebirth arrives when we recognize our inherent creative value. We are marvellous creatures, microcosms of the universe, perfect in every way. In the creative thinking process we become convinced of our own importance; we discover that life has significance. Though rebirth is a long and difficult task, each of us arrives on earth with an ordained mission. Once you know the truth about yourself, you will come to realize that success is your mission and your birthright. You were placed on this planet to be successful, and success requires no apology.
Finding one’s true place does not come without plan or effort. Being born again is no easy task. Technique and training and much hard work are required. And we are always faced with the possibility that it is destination that we may never reach. Every day we must start anew. Nevertheless, the world has a standing offer over each challenge, every difficulty, every roadblock. “Wanted- the man or woman who knows his or her life’s destiny”.
