Zero is a tool.

The Roman Empire had no zero - thus had no objective way to equate debt.
Take a cross-section of a multiplication table - one end equals 42-42, the other scales up 13 (36-49).
Sun Tzu - general and author of Art of War (circa 500) - claimed there is no instance of a country benefiting from prolonged warfare
