A LIZARD IN DECEMBER - Another Excellent STEEMIT Photo Opportunity!

in #nature8 years ago

Not only is it possible to find salamanders outside in Arkansas in December, but lizards too!

If you saw my video submission for the video idea from @winstonwolfe, you may have already saw the little lizard and salamander that I found. If you are not aware of this video project, click the link and consider helping out!

Here is my submission:

Anyway, back up in Wisconsin, we only had four kinds of lizards, and it took me more than 25 years to find my first one in the wild. Down here in Arkansas, not only are there more kinds of lizards, there seem to be more of them. Remarkably, I even found one this month!

This little one is Prairie Lizard (Sceloporus undulatus) which is also known as a fence lizard. When these cold-blooded little reptiles are heated up by the sun, they are super-fast and difficult to capture. Though this one was caught in the heat of the day, it was photographed later on, and was quite "chill" due to the drop in temperature. After a brief photo shoot, this little one released back into the wild.

They like to climb up on top of rocks, fences, and logs to absorb heat from the sun and also to look below for little spiders and insects to eat. The males have a beautiful blue colored throat and belly, which I may try to share with you next spring or summer, when I find more.

These are a few we caught earlier in the summer, when there were a lot more of them running around. Though they quickly run and hide when they see you, sometimes, once you capture them, they will hang out on your hand or shirt for a while, once they know that you won't hurt or eat them. You will also notice the color difference between the warm lizards of summer and this dark, cool, December lizard.

As always, I'm @papa-pepper, and here's the proof:

Reptiles are really incredible. Cold-blooded does not mean unable to survive in the cold then! I was sure you were going to smile in the vid :))

I was happy in the video, but it doesn't always show on my face!

Yeah, this little one will be hibernating soon enough, it's cold now!

@papa-pepper did one get into your nose?
hahaha
cute - very cute
we don't have much of them here
it's nice to see them
so cute my pet can't help it

okay not really my pet

The little ones loved this!

Yeah, really cool lizard, I love lizards!

Me too, right up there with peppers!

Such an interesting post about lizards. Then I see the one you nearly snorted... I'm not sure why I laughed so hard at that, but I did... and I thank you for that one! Frickin hilarious.

It seems that people enjoy some random, strange, bizarre stuff right near the end of an otherwise standard post.

Yup. Call it the punchline. A lazy ending often causes the audience to nearly forget the entire article. Catch them off guard and grab their attention at the end, they'll remember.
Good stuff @papa-pepper.

Cool, I'll have to remember that!

Thanks, we enjoyed finding the salamander and the lizard!

There so cute. That one may run and hide up your nose haha

I tried not to breath deeply, the shape of it reminded me of my mustache!

You could use it as a moustache, the kids would like it lol

I think that I'll need another one!
