RACCOON RELOCATION - A SECOND CHANCE AT LIFE
When you live close to the woods, wild animals will often find their way into areas where you may not want them.
Many times, these animals are seen as a nuisance or a pest. While some wild mammals like opossums and raccoons can pose a threat to our poultry, that doesn't mean that they deserve a death sentence.
While doing chores in the rain yesterday morning, my older daughters informed me that we had captured a raccoon in a live trap. I like to keep some live traps set on our property so that we can capture animals that could pose a threat to our poultry or livestock. Then, upon capture, we can relocate them to a better location for us, and for them.
This little raccoon was not too happy to be detained in the rain overnight, but I'd rather have him endure some temporary frustration and then be able to move on with his life than to have his life ended. Although raccoons can live for decades, most only live for a couple years in the wild due to hunters, roadkill, and dogs.

Great job on the relocation, brother. We have several havahart traps here as well. I need to remember to check baits on our traps as well. We have not had any recent problems since getting our pup Maggie but you never know what the future holds.

good training for the kids as well, showing that relocation rather than death is a good answer sometimes.
We use live traps here as well, because we also feel there's no reason to kill a critter, if they can relocated away from our coop instead. :D

So far we've been lucky, and no predators have ever been in our poultry enclosure.
The only animal we've ever lost to a predator was one of my Silver Fox rabbits, who unfortunately escaped her hutch, and was killed by our own dog. Oops. My fault.
My neighbors killed a bobcat that was hanging around their coop, then had it stuffed, which is sad to me, though I don't hold it against them.
But we need our predators, too many of them have been killed off, and relocating them is a far better option.

I get relocation and I'm sure you thought of it but what about other people in you area. Do you think it is possible that the racoon you released to become a nuisance to someone else?

I have never understood people who hurt animals for the sake of hurting them. It can never be justified and killing a creature that can be relocated is a waste of life. Surely we have no right to waste life?
