THE GREEN ANOLES ARE OUT IN SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI

in #nature6 years ago

Amazing! And in February nonetheless.

I love seeing lizards like this! The Green Anole (Anolis carolinensis) AKA Carolina Anole is a very recognizable lizard. It's common in the pet trade and often sold as a "chameleon" due to its color-changing abilities. They can switch from green to brown, and even get dark spots behind their eyes when they are angry or distressed. Usually capturing a wild one will cause them to display these dark spots.

Anyway, I was recently in Mississippi for work and happened upon a small pile of them. Being from Wisconsin originally, lizards were rather few and far between (we only had four native species there), so seeing any lizards at all is cool, much less in the middle of winter. Here's a few photos of some of the ones I caught. Enjoy!

Aren't they fast moving? You must have been able to catch them while they were still warming up in the sun. That's the only way I've ever caught lizards

They're really not that hard at all to catch. You just got to know how to catch them.

Indeed, and they were FAST for sure!

That first photo... Looks like it has to have NSFW tag @papa-pepper ;))
