Five-Word Fiction #03 | As I walked down the corridor

As I walked down the corridor I cannot help but drag my feet. Not only was it a busy day but it was an awfully long year. I’m tired!

I now understand how the elephant felt that was tied to a rope my mother told us about when we were children. He could have broken free yet he chose to stay fastened to the rope. What is keeping me here? I was not tied to the rope of responsibilities as a child. I can break free!

Only three more doors and I will be there. Should I not rather turn around? Now is the time to do so. This is my decision. I don’t have to please anyone. I don’t need the darn promotion. I’m sick and tired of running the race with others. My work is good enough. It is my pride!

Two doors and I will be there. Why do I allow what others think of me to drain my enthusiasm? For the second time I cannot help but to think about my mother. “You are a grown woman that can make your own decisions.” Why can I not stand up for myself? I want to go home!

One more door and it will be too late. I will have to join in the celebrations. “Ladies and gentlemen we thank you for joining us this afternoon. It is my privilege to introduce you to our new associate, Mr…”
Mister? There were no male colleagues on the candidate list. Only mollies with long nails. I’m living in a dream world. I must go in!

One more step and I am at the door. With hesitation, I put my hand on the door handle. Slowly I open the door… Nobody! The room is empty. How can that be? I heard Mr. Thomas make the announcement.

I turn my head to the whiteboard. Written in big red letters are the words,

Tired** Elephant** Race** Enthusiasm** Home
