Moving in the fast lane… That is how I feel about technology.

Do I hate it? No

Do I love it? No

I suppose the next best question will be;

Can I do without it? No

As long as there is people there will be technology whether you love it or hate it.

Technology and the world

One thing that all of us will agree to is the fact that it has changed the world for the better and behind we could ever have imagine. It made life so much easier for all of us. Is it to the cost of something else?

Let’s think about that.

  • Technology gave billions of people the opportunity to communicate wherever they might be
  • Technology changed the way we work and reshaped labour
  • Technology reformed and changed society, communities, politics, religion and so much more
  • Technology has improved our lifestyles
  • Technology is shaping the economy
  • Technology is improving the health sector
  • Technology is improving the educational sector
  • Technology is killing jobs
  • Technology solve problems and no longer the people
  • Technology led to machine automation
  • Kids are watching television and playing games even before they walk

STOP!

And that is what I want to discuss with you today, technology and children, the kids of today.

Kids and the impact of technology. Positive or negative?

There is no doubt that kids needs to interact, not only with their family members but also with friends and even their teachers. The difference is that with the modern age which they are living in today interact is no longer physical but more a virtual bond.

I am of the opinion that Gen Z experience and have access to technology from birth. As it is they are already using the internet more than any of the other generations.

Technology has made me more technically savvy and has teach me how to adapt and how to be more resilient. After all most of the successes I had in my life are based on technology.
Why not let it do the same for the kids?

My answer is thus, POSITIVE!

Children are no different than us therefore the benefits of introducing and helping them to experience technology is endless.

It is up to us to allow these impact to be positive.

Controlling kids and their use of technology

Technology has become a toy for kids. They also love playing ball so let’s put a bats in their hands so that they can hit that ball far away.

BATS: B ➜ A ➜ T ➜ S

B – Boredom

“I am bored”. Unfortunately that is not where it ends. They expect of us as parents to act straight away. So what do we do? We act immediately! We give them screen time, an electronic device in the hand, a program on their favorite channel or we switch on our computers for them.

We feel it is our responsibility to keep our children free from boredom.

Answer: Creativity is the key! Ask them what they think they can do. Bat that ball back into their court and they might just surprise you.

A – Alternatives

We need to find alternative to replace the boredom. Children are not all the same and they are actually very clever. Take in consideration what your child is inclined to do other than screen time.

Some might like art, some like music and some like sport.

Hobbies are also great alternatives. Another great idea is to give kids chores to do. Reward them screen time based on the chores they have performed. They now have to earn their screen time.

Answer: It is for us as parents to find simple alternatives to direct them away from technology and stimulate them.

T – Time

First thing you need to do is to establish the time when you your child become that “screen addict”. Is it just after school when they get home? Is it after they had supper and their bath?

Once you have establish this time you can work around it and change what they are doing in that time. Let them make or help with lunch. Let them read to you.

Answer: Observe the pattern, break the pattern and change the pattern.

S – Support

As a parent we are the most important factor in the lives of kids. To jump on them when you see them on their phones is the wrong thing to do. Reprimand doesn’t always work. Remember, kids mirror what we do and are we not constantly on our phones?

What you do for your children and how you do it matters!

We need to bond more with the kids. The more we do this the more they lend towards us, wanting to be with us. Discuss the day with them, create family time and implement E-Fasting where the whole family must put away their phones or devices.

Answer: They key is communication!

We don’t know what technology will bring in the future but one thing is for certain technology transformation and development is changing with the blink of an eye!

It is for us to make sure that we make technology kid-friendly!

Another one! Thank you! 🤛🏻

Great post👍 Reshared on @southernafrica

You are right, communication is the key, punishment is not the solution to most issue, but with communication and support, kids would understand and do what it expected of them. Time schedule on when kids are to be on screen is very important as they will not stay glued to their screen and got addicted to it. Thank you for sharing ma.

Thanks for the visit my friend!
Gosh as it is I am sitting with my stepson and the forever screen time.
The older they get the more difficult it becomes.

😂😂, you are right, as older as they get the more difficult it become but I can bet you would do a great job cautioning and guiding him right.

This is a really straight forward post, technology for kids is neither bad nor good, it's only on to the parents to help their children control it wisely if not it will become bad.
I like it when you talked about alternatives, this is where most parents go wrong, they don't find alternatives for kids.

Thanks for sharing

There is only one problem, the older they get the more difficult it becomes to find that alternative. Or should I say, the more expensive the alternative becomes. (•ิ‿•ิ)
Thank you for reading and supporting my post! It is appreciated!

I agree with you on that point and you're very much welcome

Your post has been well aligned
I believe everyone will have an opinion on how tech affects thier kids
The key is really communication. When we calmly explain certain things to our kids they understand better and might listen.

Good luck on the contest Mme

I know I am one of those who often overreact. Guilty!
I'm trying my best these days to stay calm. The older they get, the more difficult it becomes.
Thank you for reading and engaging with my post. (•ิ‿•ิ)

You are welcome Mme

Indeed, technology has changed everything and the kids who are born in this era of technology can not be separated from it.

BATS- Boredom, Alternative, Time and Support fit in perfectly. I appreciate the way you arranged this publication. You are experienced in controlling the kids on the usage of technology.

The world itself has made so many advances in technology and our work here in steemit is only possible due to technology. Thanks for your wisdom

Thanks for the reading and engagement 🌼
As a parent we must always stay one step ahead of our children and it seems like technology is not always on our side. I for one feels like I’m falling behind. 😊

The time of our childhood is not the same as today, now children have technological equipment for toys.

On the one hand, these represent a great support for their intellectual growth, but on the other hand, they expose themselves to various risks, which you have exposed very well.

Your BATS strategy is very useful to control the use of technological devices by children.

Successes in the contest.

Thank you for engaging with my post.
It’s getting more and more difficult to balance the two especially with older kids.
