Are you still using the smaller coins of your currency? Does your "1 or 10 cents" can still buy you something?

In my country, those lower denominations no longer works as a medium of exchange. People just do not use them again.

the last time I saw coins would be about ten years ago. It was even then that the  CBN (our central bank) was trying to revamp the economy. Then, they tried bringing back the one naira coin and also introduced the two naira coin. It didn't succeed though as people couldn't just see themselves using coin, the metal dangling in their pockets as they walked or in their bags. It just couldn't work.

The coins weren't the only ones affected. They also tried to bring back the five naira notes. This one worked to an extent too but people did not like the idea of having such lower denominations in their bags. It made them look petty, at least the ones I know. Even myself, i couldn't deal with carrying such a currency that had relatively no value. Now, the five naira can buy nothing on it's own, not even the smallest candy. Even the ten naira note is pretty limited in the things that can be gotten with it. That is the situation of the naira in Nigeria. It's just what it is. The rate of inflation has affected our currency to the extent that our highest note, the one thousand naira can barely get you enough items from the market.

I hope things could go back to the way it was some decades ago, in terms of what our money can buy. However, that;s mere wishful thinking. Some serious work would need to be done to get our currency valued that much. I'm not an economist. What do i know?
