Houdeng-Goegnies

There were really not many responses to my earlier post (non actually), but ok, here goes: It was a detail of the Houdeng-Goegnies boat lift, The first of a series of 4 lift locks along the centre canal near La Louvière, Belgium.

Lift N° 1 is the oldest of the four, being built in 1888. Designed by Edwin Clark from the British company Clark, Stansfield & Clark, it are the oldest boat lifts in the world that still function (although they are now only open for recreational use.) These industrial monuments were designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1998.

Following an accident in January 2002, in which a malfunctioning elevator began rising as a motor barge was exiting, lift no. 1 was taken out of service. The repair work which began in 2005, included a thorough restoration. Although it is functional, it is not clear if it will ever operate again...
