Here’s How To Deal With The Summer Heat

in #health6 years ago

Here are the 5 tips to beat the heat during summer season:

1. Do not use handheld electric fans

"Fans create air flow and a false sense of comfort but do not reduce body temperature," The Federal Emergency Management Agency stated on their website. Handheld electric fans have a drying effect on our skin, preventing natural evaporation from taking place.

2. Limit alcohol and soda intake

Soda can give you the refreshing feeling during the summer season, but a study revealed that soda actually has a dehydrating effect. Meanwhile, alcohol should be consumed with caution because it can likely lead to increased urine output.

3. Take breaks under shade to cool off

Give yourself some time to get away from the sun every now and then. Do not hesitate to go outside to cool off when temperatures are high.

"To stay indoors or in shade even just an hour or two out of the heat can really help the body repair," said Elizabeth Merson, San Luis Obispo County Public Health Emergency Preparedness Program Manager.

4. Wear loose, light-colored clothing

Do not wear tight-fitting, synthetic or dark-colored clothing as they can absorb heat and restrict air flow. The most recommended material during the summer season is cotton since it can absorb moisture (sweat) easily.

5. Head down to lower floors of buildings

The upper floors of the buildings are warmer compared to the lower ones. Try to consider sleeping the lower grounds to have a naturally cool environment. Also, cover your windows with louvers, awnings, shades, or drapes to reduce the levels of indoor heat by up to 80 percent.

Regarding handheld electric fans: That's how our skin dries, by evaporation. Saying that it has a drying effect and it prevents evaporation is kinda suspicious. What are you really trying to say?
