The Star of the Late-Season Garden
Aster flowers, with their daisy-like blooms and rich colors, bring a vibrant burst of life to gardens just when most summer flowers begin to fade. Named after the Greek word for "star," asters live up to their name, lighting up the garden with starry petals in shades of purple, blue, pink, and white often with a cheerful yellow center.Asters belong to the Asteraceae family, the same family as sunflowers and daisies. There are many species within the aster genus, but some of the most popular garden varieties include Aster novi-belgii (New York aster) and Aster novae-angliae (New England aster). These hardy perennials are native to North America and Europe and thrive in cooler climates.
Growing from 1 to 6 feet tall depending on the variety, asters feature dense clusters of small, star-shaped flowers that bloom from late summer through fall. They’re especially valuable in the garden because they extend color well into autumn, when many other flowers have finished blooming.
