The Colorful Queen of the Tropics
Bougainvillea is one of the most stunning and resilient flowering plants, known for its vibrant colors and ability to thrive in warm climates. Whether cascading over walls, climbing trellises, or planted as a decorative shrub, this plant adds a splash of tropical beauty wherever it grows.
Bougainvillea is a genus of thorny ornamental vines, shrubs, and trees native to South America, particularly Brazil, Peru, and Argentina. It belongs to the Nyctaginaceae family, commonly known as the four o’clock family. Named after French explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville, who discovered the plant in the 18th century, it has since become a favorite in gardens worldwide.
What most people think of as Bougainvillea "flowers" are actually bracts, which are specialized leaves that surround the plant’s true flowers—small, white, and inconspicuous blooms. The bracts come in a dazzling array of colors Magenta, Purple, Red, Orange, Yellow, Pink, White. These vibrant bracts attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, making Bougainvillea an excellent choice for pollinator-friendly gardens.
