My Actifit Report Card: May 8 2019

A bit more than half of my steps today were on the indoor track at the rec center. A nasty windy chilly wet day made the idea of a walk along the lakeshore not all that appealing. Ideally, I listen to a podcast while at the rec center but the basketball courts below the track were crowded and loud.

Pandora to the rescue. My Thumbprint Radio channel played a bit of everything: Télépopmusik, Moby, Thievery Corporation, Brian Eno, David Bowie, Stanley Turrentine, Phantogram, Miles Davis, Kelly Joe Phelps, Joy Division, New Order — I guess I have weirdly eclectic tastes in music.

I’m reading a collection of stories by Franz Kafka so read up on him a bit. I had known that his day job was with an insurance company but didn’t know that he mostly investigated claims related to workplace injuries and may have (it’s not entirely clear) been one of the first people to advocate for “hard hats” to be issued to civilian workers in dangerous jobs. Kafka died relatively young, before Hitler’s rise to power. At least one of his lovers and all three of his sisters died in the Holocaust.
