আমার জন্ম এই ঢাকা মেডিকেল কলেজ হাসপাতালেই, সেই একই জায়গা যেখানে আমার মা পড়াশোনা করেছেন এবং প্রায় ১৮ বছর পর আমিও যেখানকার একজন শিক্ষার্থী হব। যাদের মা বাবা ডাক্তার, তাদের সবার একটি অভিযোগ থাকে যে তারা মা বাবার সাথে খুব বেশি সময় কাটাবার সুযোগ পায়না। আমার মা যেহেতু ফিজিওলজিতে ক্যারিয়ার করেছেন, তাই ভাগ্যক্রমে অন্যদের তুলনায় মায়ের সঙ্গ আমি একটু বেশিই পেয়েছি। মা তাঁর ক্লিনিকাল ক্যারিয়ার বিসর্জন দিয়ে বেসিক সাব্জেক্ট বেছে নেন শুধুমাত্র যাতে তার সন্তানদের নিজের মত করে বড় করতে পারেন। ক্যারিয়ার বাদ দিয়ে সন্তানদের বেছে নেবার সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে যথেষ্ট সাহসের প্রয়োজন। যত বেশি মাকে দেখেছি, তত বেশি অবাক হয়েছি এবং ধীরে ধীরে মায়ের পেশাটাকেও ভালবেসে ফেলেছি। এছাড়া দেখতাম যে প্রতিবছর বছরের একটি দিনে উনি ছুটি নিতেন( দিনটি ছিল ডিএমসিডের দিন) কলেজের বন্ধুদের সাথে দেখা করার জন্য। মাঝে মাঝে আমাকেও সাথে নিতেন আর আমিও স্বপ্ন দেখতাম যে আমি মায়ের সাথে একদিন শুধু তাঁর কন্যা হিসেবে নয় বরং একজন ডিএমসিয়ান হিসেবে যাবো।
যদিও মা ফিজিওলজির প্রফেসর, কেন জানি কখনোই মায়ের সাথে সেভাবে পড়াশোনা নিয়ে আলোচনা করা হতো না। কিন্তু মেডিকেলের প্রথম দিন হতেই তিনি আমাকে যেটা শিক্ষা দিয়ে এসেছেন তা হলো মূল্যবোধ যা যেকোনো একাডেমিক জ্ঞানের চেয়ে অধিক মূল্যবান। মা আমাকে শিখিয়েছেন আন্তরিকতা ও একাগ্রতা। একটা জিনিস উনি আমাকে বারবার বলেন যে ক্যারিয়ারের সাথে কখনোই অর্থ উপার্জনের ইচ্ছাকে না জড়াতে। নিজে উদার হতে শিখো, অন্যের প্রতি সদয় হও ও সাধারণ জীবনযাপন করো- তাহলে জীবনে সাফল্য একদিন না একদিন আসবেই।
ছোট থাকতে যখনই অসুস্থ হতাম, এমনকি এখনো, মাই আমার ডাক্তারের ভূমিকায় অবতীর্ণ হন। এখান থেকেই আমার ডাক্তার হবার অনুপ্রেরণা পাওয়া। আমিও একজন ডাক্তার হিসেবে মাকে দেখে রাখতে চাইতাম। যখন মায়ের বয়স হয়ে যাবে, আমি তাঁর পাশে থাকবো ঠিক যেভাবে ছোটবেলায় উনি আমার পাশে ছিলেন। আমাদের সবসময় মনে রাখা উচিত যে আমাদের প্রধান চেম্বার আমাদের বাসা এবং মা বাবাই আমাদের সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ রোগী। আমাদের চিকিৎসা ও সেবায় যদি আমাদের মা বাবা সন্তুষ্ট থাকেন, তাহলে আমরা সমাজকেও সন্তুষ্ট করতে পারবো। তাই আমাদের লক্ষ্য হওয়া উচিত আমাদের মায়েদের জন্য ভালো ডাক্তার হওয়া এবং এভাবেই আমরা দেশের জন্যও ভালো ডাক্তার হতে পারবো।

I was born here in DMCH, the same place which is my mother's alma mater and some 18 years later which will be mine too. A common story of the children whose parents are physicians is that they don't get the right share of time to spend with their parents. As my mother did her career in Physiology, luckily enough I got to spend more time with her than the rest. She gave up her clinical career so she could raise her children under her own supervision. She sacrificed her career for her children's sake, as choice that takes immense courage to make. The more I saw her, the more I was amazed and fell in love with her profession as well. I also observed that every year she would take leave on a particular(which was DMC day) and meet her old friends. Sometimes she would take me along and I dreamt of one day when I'll accompany her there not as her daughter only but also as a DMCan.
Though she is a professor of Physiology herself, for reasons unknown we rarely had any academic discussions when I was taking the course. But what she has taught me from my first day as a medical student is ethics which is far more valuable. She has taught me sincerity and determination. One thing she always emphasizes on is to never put financial interests in front of your career. Be generous, be kind,be simple and success will follow you eventually.
Whenever I fell ill at childhood, even now still, it will be her who takes the roll of my doctor. That's where from I took the inspiration. I wanted to take care of my mother as a doctor too. When she'll grow old, I'll be there for her just as she was by my side when I was a child. We should always keep in mind that our first and foremost chamber is our family and our parents are always our top priority patients. If we could satisfy our parents with our care and skills, then we can make the society content with our service too. So our goals should be to be a good doctor to our mothers and only then we can be good doctors for the nation.
