What is agriculture, and why is it important for human societies?

Agriculture is simply defined as the production of crops and rearing of animals for the benefit of man, it also involves the processing , transportation and marketing of agricultural produce to final consumer.

Importance to human society

Provision of food: it is only through agriculture that man can , feed, agriculture provide food in form of maize ,rice ,yam ,milk meat egg etc for human consumption either in fresh or processed form .

a nation that can feed its population can save a lot of money for other goods and services that are not provided through agriculture.

Provision of raw materials: agriculture provide fibre and cotton for textile industries for the production clothes. Cocoa seeds or beans are used in manufacture of beverages.

latex from rubber plants are used for maunfactures of tyres , tubes plastic buckets. Trees provide wood and timber used for roofing and production of furniture etc.

Source of foreign exchange: through the exportation of agricultural produce like cocoa , groundnuts.

palm produce cotton kenaf ,a nation can earn foreign exchange. Foreign exchange earned can be used in turn to purchase goods necessary for improvement of agriculture.

Provision of employment for the working population: agriculture for the agro-based industries provide employment opportunities for 60-70 of the population, also some people are employed into commercial ventures to provide food to feed the country and also for export.

Provision on income: this is through the sales of crops and crops products sales of animals and animals products.

What are the main types of agriculture practiced globally (e.g., subsistence, commercial, industrial)?

The main types of agriculture practiced global is commercial agriculture ,it is defined as the type of agriculture that is considered with the production of food animals and cash crops in large quantities for sales.

Commercial agriculture is basically growing crops intended to sell the produce for profit in the local or export market.

Commercial agriculture involves huge investments of capital or money, it uses agro chemicals such as fertilizer pesticides , insecticides sole cropping of farming is usually practiced.

Can you list some key crops grown around the world and their uses?

Grain
Wheat: this is used for making bread and baked goods ,Wheat is a cereal grain grown in many varieties worldwide. It provides antioxidants, vitamins , minerals, and fiber.

Rice is a cereal grain and in its domesticated form is the staple food of over half of the world's population, particularly in Asia and Africa.

Roots and tubes

Potatoes: this is a good that has so many variety of eating like frying , smashing , boiling and chips.

Cassava: this can be used in making flour, bread and a source of starch, and this is widely consumed in nigeria.
