Had something similar happen. Lead singer and rhythm guitarist announced that he had decided to book a vacation (his 4th so far that year) which conflicted with a gig already on the books. He made no effort to book around the date conflict and made no apologies to band members, he just said that he preferred to be on vacation versus play the gig. The rest of us decided that we'd hire a sub for the night (not the easiest thing when the missing person is a frontman) and play it anyway. The bass player made a connection with a local player (who was more of a pro than we were) and we pulled off the gig despite some difficulties. Amazingly when he returned from vacation and learned that we had not cancelled the gig he was angry at the rest of the band (guy was a narcissist). Although this one incident didn't trigger a band breakup there was a definite impact to attitudes and it was the beginning of the end.
