Sakura in Copenhagen - Top 3 best places for seeing the cherry blossom in the Danish capital

in #cherryblossom7 years ago

The Japanese cherry blossom (in Japanese "Sakura") is one of the most important symbols of Japanese culture. It stands for beauty, awakening, and transience. The time of the cherry blossom marks a highlight in the Japanese calendar and the beginning of spring. People around the world admire the beauty of the colourful blossoming that can range from white to pink. The cherry blossom is usually associated with Japan, but it can also be admired in a place you probably wouldn’t expect it first, namely the Danish capital of Copenhagen.

#1 - Bispebjerg Cemetery

From the end of April, around 150.000 Copenhageners and tourists visit the Bispebjerg Cemetery north of Copenhagen to enjoy the beauty of this unique tree and take their instagram shots. The Bispebjerg Cemetery lies about 6km north of the city center and can easily be reached via a 20min bike ride from there (like pretty much everything in Copenhagen). The entry is free and signs guide the way to the „Krisebærtræerne“ (cherry trees). It is highly recommended to come early or on weekdays, because the cherry tree road is a popular tourist magnet that attracts people like blossoms attract bees (pun intended). It can be quite hard to enjoy the atmosphere on a Sunday afternoon, with hundreds of people mingling under the narrow cherry trees. Also, it totally ruins your instagram picture. But if you get up early or have time to go on a weekday, there’s basically no better place in Copenhagen to see the cherry blossom. The color is just beautiful.

Please remember that this is a cemetery. Although the Danes are quite relaxed about their cemeteries (it is completely normal to see people running, cycling, or drinking alcohol in a Danish cemetery), people absolutely don’t like stepping on the grass or even cutting out cherry blossoms. So enjoy your time but please be respectful. While you’re there, why not go for a walk in the stunningly beautiful (and enormous) cemetery?

#2 Langelinie Park

Langelinie Park lies between the little mermaid and the harbor, next to the Kastellet, and is closer to the city center than Bispebjerg. The cherry tree blossoms have a different color hire than in Bispebjerg, where they have a strong pink colour. Here, they are rather white. But the park itself is beautifully located next to the sea and offers stunning views of the city as well as places to relax. Interestingly, it is usually not as crowded as Bispebjerg, although it is located right next to some of Copenhagen’s main tourist attractions.

#3 Stadsgraven

Separating Christianshavn from the Island of Amager, the Stadsgraven is one of my favourite places in Copenhagen for a hangout in the park on a lazy Sunday. It’s not one of the main cherry tree hotspots of the city, but has a little more of a „local“ feeling than the previous two places that are usually quite crowded.
