Steem Cartoon : 101 of Cartoon Drawing in Less than 101 Ways
One of the best thing in art is there is no right or wrong. While the real world is ruled by logic and science, the cartoon world is amorphous, light hearted, simple, colourful and engaging. That makes our world a very much livelier one than traditional office setting of computers, cabinets and wall paintings.
One of my all time favourite is the creation of the unknown which is very much the alien species. It is hard to argue with me what an alien looks like, hence our alien is pretty much anything.
You can have an alien that looks like a half breed gazelle or hyene or an alien that looks like an overgrown worm wearing a piece of radical attire. To make their presence more prominent, give them a gun and immediately it adds to the aggression of the characters. Aggression is a necessary evil. We do see Donald Duck getting angry or the Coyote that tries to kills the Road Runner.
But to every villain there must be a superhero, one that defies all odds and carry out his duties to save the world. One that is fearless and muscular. One that is heavy at the top and have small legs. At this stage the anatomy of the human body is the least important to a cartoonist unlike an illustrator or a comic artist.
Then there is the element of surprise that we humour ourselves every now and then, like a birthday shoutout to our brotther @perennial who has always been our friend and supporter. What better way than to celebrate with a bunch of unknown creatures from outer space.
Of course the basic lineart is important. The strokes must be clean and the line must be precise with the least scrambles.
Then there is the infusion of grey scale. This grey scale plays an important role to bring the foreground out and to push the background back. Then the one that is less grey will form the middle ground.
Then comes the colouring. It can range from simple colouring to extensive ones. Of course cartoons are as good a read in black and white as much as coloured ones. Of course colours are more attractive but it also means more work and usually this is done by another artist.
Then the final part is the infusion of comic relief or jokes. This is important to give the cartoon a lighter feel and a more approachable touch. It also mean that we can use our slapstick humour in our work rather than to use on our friends and fail to solicit any laughter.
So here we have it, the basic 101 of cartoon drawing.
