Steem Cartoon : Influence of Fire & Ice
Classic Animation
I am not sure if anyone here is familiar with this animation called Fire & Ice. This is the animation that sparked my interest to be an animator. I didn't start off as a cartoonist. I was first an animator and then the job opportunities wasn't huge in Malaysia so we have to make do with whatever job that comes along.
Fire and Ice was written by Gerry Conway and Roy Thomas. At that time, this was like the bomb. The work is a result of Frank Frazetta's genius. He is a fantasy painting artist that has stylized many figure drawings and at that time he has single handedly revolutionised how comic artists design their cartoon characters. The body anatomy has to be more realistic with right proportions.
The method that he use for animation is rotoscoping that that has kickstarted the the fantasy world of animation.
Rotoscoping
To those who are not familiar with rotoscoping, this is my miserable understanding of what it means. It is a trace over technique used by animators to create a realistic live action movement frame by frame. Very much like how we would view movies nowadays.
Today this rotoscoping technique is used in computers but in the past the process is like the above illustration.
Frank Frazetta
This man is one man that has sparked my interest with his fantasy painting. These are his works.
If you ever wonder why my cartoons and illustrations would usually incorporate dinosaurs, here is the man that influenced it all. It is because of his drawings that inspired and given me many ideas on my own creation.
His drawing kind of liberates the mind, it sets the creative spirit free and gives the empowerment to artists to think that as long as you can imagine, you can draw it and make a living out of it. It is an idealistic concept to me but this is the spirit that I have carried with me throughout my journey as an artist and it kept me going.
I will leave you guys with a trailer from the animation that has inspired me.
