Contrast - Ran Art Blog

Contrast is a powerful way for your drawing or painting to have presence.
Meaning, to stand out and grab the viewer's attention.

Arguably, the most used contrast is in brightness values.
Meaning, a strong difference between dark and light.

The idea is not to have just dark and light values, but to have a range of values for a drawing to look realistic.

Some materials have strong contrast between light and dark values, like some metals.

Others have more gentle transitions in values, like wood.

Keep in mind, usually dark pencils are softer, and tend to break.

Just keep sharpening them, and do not use a super soft pencil. 6B grade is more than enough. 4B is just as great.

Good to know:
Contrast can be in texture, between rough and smooth areas.
In edges, hard vs. soft (in focus, or blurry).
Colors, between different hues (notably complementary colors).
Temperature, warm vs. cool colors.
Saturation, rich colors vs. dull and grayish colors.
