Why the phrase "get up with the left foot"?

in #busy7 years ago (edited)

Sometimes I am intrigued by the fact that we often get up in a certain mood, sometimes the day starts very badly and its end is just the goal for this tormented day to end, I do not know what scientific fact isolates the idea of attracting positive things or negative to our life, but it is something very accurate and common that when we are having a hard time everything seems to get worse and worse.

Has it not happened to them that they wake up upset or sad without knowing why ?, I believe that sometimes our brain collapses and depends on what is happening around us, situations of stress or emotional situations lead us to wake up and simply to average tomorrow I want to restart the day.

In certain cultures like in my country, they call it "get up with the left foot", but to what is this phrase ?.

The superstition of standing with the left foot

You wake up, the sun shines, you stretch when suddenly ... oh no !: You got up with the left foot!

A superstition that for many is horror because it indicates that you will spend the worst of your days, blame him for all the unforeseen events that may happen during the course of the day, and of course everything, absolutely everything will be because "we get up with the foot left".

But where does this belief come from?

It turns out that this is older than it seems, more or less in the nineteenth century and grew in the world of sailors, during this period no sailor or fisherman who was sane was getting on the ship by port; that is, on the left side of the ship, it is more; It was a bit more complicated to climb up the right side of the ship (starboard); but none dared to contradict this tradition, but why was tradition? many like me will be asked, and what I could investigate about the subject is that at that time there was a belief that everything left-handed was unnatural (sorry guys if somebody is left-handed); and of course it was born out of the relationship with which most human beings are right-handed.

I kept reading about the topic, and inquiring more about the religious theme also comes into play on this superstition, and is that according to biblical texts always on the right was the side to follow to get to paradise and is the position in which they are sitting chosen by God. Even many traditions condemn the left side like the Romans where they predicted things by observing the flight of the birds, and if the birds went to the left it was a symbol of bad news or something bad could happen. If we get deeper to the origin of the word in Latin left is "sinester" which is the origin of adjectives as sinister.

The truth is that times have changed a lot (well), now we do not look at lefties like weird creatures, in a way some superstitions still live and I think that if there is something wrong in the left (politically), I think it is very great to be left-handed, so it is mostly left-handed people develop much more the creative side of the brain, many artists are left-handed and I do not think there is something wrong with lefties, right Flanders?

So you know who to blame for a bad day, remember with what foot they got up and they will have the perfect excuse to complain about a long transit queue, or that some bird will leave you gifts, did you burn with the coffee of the tomorrow ?, if I think that is also because you stopped with the left foot. Unless ultimately you are not very believer of these superstitions.
