BaFin (Bundesanstalt für Finanzdienstleistungsaufsicht) points out that the purchase of coins - also referred to as tokens, depending on their design - involves considerable risks for investors in the context of so-called initial coin offers (ICOs). ICOs are highly speculative investments. Investors should be prepared for a total loss of their investment. As with most current trends, high public interest in ICOs also attracts scammers.
