Diary Entry from the perspective of a Bystander during the Holocaust
7/8/1948
Dear Diary,
It’s been 3 years since the war ended and The Third Reich’s rule ended over Germany. I still remember the day Schutzstaffel men marched into our town and dragged every Jew they could find. Back then, no one knew where they were being sent, rumors spread but as the war came to its end. The things they did were no longer a secret. The Jews were sent to Death Camps, where they worked all day, they barely ate and were killed in gas chambers. I feel immense guilt now but during the war, it wasn’t like that. After WW1, the sudden influx of Jews fleeing warzones caused a huge chunk of high-paying jobs to be taken by them and it felt right to take back what was ours. This wasn’t their country, they weren’t Aryan Germans. They rigged the economy and after they were taken. Almost every single pure German had a job, I was finally able to provide for my family. However, once I found out that my success was built upon mass graves of millions of Jews. I would never have accepted it.
I believe the only solution for Germans and Jews to live peacefully with one another is to accept our differences and move forward. That is the only way that we can fill this gaping hole between our communities because The Third Reich blamed Jews for Germany losing WW1 and dehumanized them. We became desensitized and turned a blind eye to the atrocities that were being committed against Jews. We have to accept Jews into our society and learn to live and let live, this will allow Germans and Jews to live peacefully.
