Who was Ron Halt?

I think he was an artist: fifteen times
each week, during his childhood, a rough sketch
would be filed in the bin, crumpled and thrown.

School was OK. He stayed out of trouble
and off the radar, never understaning,
and never being told, the purpose.

How did he end up a geologist?
Choosing his university
because of the mountains, and the subject

because of the fieldtrips, the artist slumbered
and with a little hammer he tapped rocks,
microscoped the details, conned the standard texts.

Charles Hutton's beautiful vision
slowly came to captivate him, filling
his mind with its majestic grandeur,

the scientific narrative unfolding
into all corners, each nook and cranny
glowing with harmonious unity.

He started a business, selling woollens,
jumpers, socks, hats and scarves, and mittens
for the outdoor types, which really did quite well.

Secretly bored to hell, he sat each day,
monitoring the profits, and in the lowest
drawer, down and to his left, he kept
the little hammer, and sketches from his youth.
