# 782 - Early American Commemoratives - Part 10
Most of the info below comes from: https://earlycommemorativecoins.com/
"Commemorative coins were first issued by the United States Mint in 1892 to mark the World’s Columbian Exposition. The silver half dollars depicting Christopher Columbus were sold at the expedition for one dollar each. In subsequent years, the US Mint would continue the tradition of issuing gold and silver commemoratives to honor the important people, places, and events of the country.
Early commemorative coins were issued between the years 1892 and 1954 and have included primarily silver half dollars and gold dollars."
I will show the series "Silver Early Commemoratives". It will be presented in alphabetical order.
All coins weight 12.5g, with 90% silver purity.
The tenth is a MS65 1936 "Gettysburg" Half Dollar.
"The 1936 Battle of Gettysburg Half Dollar was issued to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the pivotal battle of the American Civil War. The issue has become one of the more popular among the early commemorative coins.
The coins were issued to celebrate an anniversary which occurs in 1938, however they were issued in 1937, and dated 1936."
PCGS graded 6,191 1936 "Gettysburg" Half Dollars, with 1,875 as MS65 and 1,042 above. 26,928 1936 "Gettysburg" were minted in Philadelphia.
Today's price is around $700.00.
"The obverse depicts Union and Confederate soldiers in profile. The coin was designed by Frank Vittor."
"On the reverse are Union and Confederate shields separated by a fasces, a bundle of sticks bound together around a double sided ax, with sprays of oak and laurel to each side."
