Weekly Overview of Translation Category - Week 46, 2018

As a Community Manager for Utopian, I will continue to write these weekly reports for the translation category. The report will include:

1. Translators' Activitites
2. Language Moderators' Activitities

In this report, I will follow the format of the other Utopian categories to provide the following information:

• Graphs of the translators' contributions
• Graphs of language teams contributions
• Charts of comparisons of the different weeks
• Graphs of moderators' scoring
• Average score of the category & comparisons
• Showcase the staff pick of the week if there is one

This is my write-up for Week 46: Nov 8 - 15, 2018

A. Contributions Summary

1. Translators' Contributions

This week, we have 55 Contributions.

In the translation category, it is important that we monitor the contributions submitted by the different language teams as translators work together in teams.

Therefore, the statistics and graphs will not show the contributions of the 101 individual translators but will display the 17 language teams instead.

The following chart shows the distribution of contributions of the 17 different language teams.

Analysis:

• From the above chart, we can see that Spanish is the most active team this week.
• Followed by Polish and Serbian
• Then Filipino and Yoruba
• There is no contribution from these 2 teams: Portuguese, Hebrew

2. Post Contributions - 4 Weeks Comparisons

The following table shows the number of contributions in the different language teams for 4 weeks.

Analysis:

• This week, the number of contributions has gone down to 55.
• The Spanish team is still leading as the most active team. It is understandable as there are 10 translators in that team.
• The following language teams increased in contributions this week: Filipino, Polish, Yoruba, French, Serbian, Russian, Slovenian
• The following language teams dropped in their contributions this week: Spanish, Greek, Dutch, Italian, Vietnamese, Chinese

3. Comparisons of Contributions in Chart Form

Analysis:

• There are 4 color bars for each language teams with each bar representing the 4 different weeks.
• The following teams are quite stable in their own ways: Spanish, Filipino, Yoruba, French, Vietnamese, Russian
• The following teams show signs of getting more engaged: Serbian, Polish
• The following teams show signs of getting less engaged: Greek, Chinese, Dutch, Arabic

4. Total Number of Contributions for 4 Weeks

It is important that we meausure the language team activities not just by one week but to see their monthly performance.

In this way, we can get an overall picture of the language teams activities.

The following graph shows the total number of contributions of the 17 language teams in the past 4 weeks (Dates: October 18 - November 15, 2018)

• Week 43: Oct 18 - 24, 2018
• Week 44: Oct 25 - 31, 2018
• Week 45: Nov 1 - 7, 2018
• Week 46: Nov 8 - 15, 2018

Analysis

From the chart, we are able to see the situation of each language team in the spread of 4 weeks:

• Spanish team is leading in a consistent manner
• Followed by Italian, Greek
• And then Filipino, Dutch and Polish

B. Language Moderators' Scoring - Week 46

For the scoring distribution, we have 25 moderators, so I need to group the scoring into language teams so that you can see the analysis clearer in the distribution of scoring.

• 79 - 1 contribution (Greek)
• 78 - 13 contributions (Chinese, French, Italian, Serbian, Spanish)
• 75 - 2 contributions (Spanish)
• 73 - 16 contributions (Dutch, Filipino, French, Italian, Polish, Serbian, Vietnamese, Yoruba)
• 70 - 3 contributions (Spanish)
• 69 - 3 contributions (Spanish)
• 68 - 5 contributions (Dutch, Greek, Polish)
• 66 - 2 contributions (French, Polish)
• 64 - 3 contributions ((Filipino, Slovenian)
• 59 - 2 contributions (Polish, Vietnamese)
• 57 - 1 contribution (Yoruba)

3. Analysis

• The highest score this week is 79
• About half the contributions receive scores between 70 to 80
• A big proportion of scoring are at 78 and 73
• Even the lowest score of 23 got upvoted this week
• This week, 54/55 contributions got upvoted at the time of this writing. No contributions got expired. 1 contribution is pending to be upvoted soon.

4. Average Score

The average score of the 55 Contributions is 69.52

C. Staff Pick This Week

This week's staff pick is from the Chinese team. It received a score of 78.

Translation Post by @aafeng: Simplified Chinese translation of Node.js #6 - 1267 words

Node.js is a free, cross-platform, open source server environment to execute JavaScript outside of a browser. Traditionally, JavaScript is used for client side scripting and runs by a JavaScript engine embedded within a browser. With Node.js, JavaScript can be used to write command line programs or server side scripting. By this way, developers only need to learn a single programming language to do both server side and client side programming.

With his professional background in programming, the translator had a 100% accurate translation of 1267 words. In the post, the translator highlighted the most interesting part of the discussion about the different ways to allocate a buffer, the potential problems and proposed solutions to the performance problem. He used his expertise to show how to translate the long strings to fluent and easy to understand Chinese. Great examples are given to the post.

D. Moderators' Activities - Aristotle App

The Aristotle app is ongoing in the development by the Greek team. You can follow up this project in this Gitub Link.

I've asked @dimitrisp for an early entry to try out their app.

• The app is going to be a great tool for our translators.
• The tool aims to become an LM's personal assistant as they do the moderating work.

Here is a peek of what the app can do:

• Different translators
• Different proofreaders
• Date when the translation of the project began
• Date when the translation of the project finished

I hope you can see the power of this app. This will certainly help the DaVinci Team to keep track of the activities of all the 101 translators easily.

F. Upcoming Events - Work on the Questionnaire

From the above analysis, especially in the scoring of the translations, we see the need of making the scoring more granular so as to reflect the quality of the translation work.

This week, the DaVinci team submitted a proposal for the changes to be made in the questionnaire. In the coming week, they will work together with @elear and the Language moderators in the DaVinci Discord channel to make improvement on the questionnaire. We invite all the language moderators to give your feedback and comments in the #language-manager-room in the DaVinci Discord Channel.
