Why Steemit's Blogging Centric Platform is NOT Condusive to What Steemit Actually is?

So recently I've had a few discussions in the comments sections of posts about Steemit, the state of Steemit, the future of Steemit, and today something hit me.

The entire layout, user interface, and nature of how Steemit works is completely wrong for the type of platform it is. I've heard talk of "communities" comming to Steemit, and while that would be a great thing, it seems to be a lot of talk and not a whole lot of action.

Despite having been on here for over a year I don't really get under the hood of Steemit and understand all the inner workings, probably like most of your average social media platform users who are the people were trying to get on here and keep on here.

I've never been part of Steemit chats because quite honestly I don't want to have to jump around from Steem chat, to discourse to discord to telegram just to have a fucking conversation, it's asking too much and that's partly why retention on here is so bad because most people can't be bothered. I'm no fan of Facebook, fuck I don't even have a Facebook account unless you count a fake name account I only use to run Facebook ads and to send unsolicited dick pics to pretty girls, okay just kidding about the second part I don't really do that.

Anyhow, my point is on most platforms it doesn't require so much effort to be a part of the community. Recently I had commented on one of @yallapi 's post inquiring if he would be willing to do an interview on my Youtube Channel and he told me to contact him on Discourse or Discord or whatever it's called. I set it up to message him but quite honestly I'm not sure how to go back and check that message or see if he's responded. I'm gonna try to figure it out because I'm a big fan of his and his content and I'd love to have him on but that's really the only time I've ever given a shit enough to branch out into this maze of trying to be fully part of this community.

We call Steemit a social media platform and a community, but it's more a blogging platform with a community aspect intertwined.

When you actually think about it Steemit really isn't about content, it's about networking and engaging with others and community, yet the entire way the site works is more like a Medium or a Blogger than it is a community site. When I think about communities I think about groups, and Q&A sites like Quora, Yahoo Answers or Reddit, I don't think of a blogging platform.

And I think most of us can agree that creating content doesn't get you ahead, most of it goes unseen so despite having an interface that's condusive to creating content on a platform that doesn't reward content is backwards as fuck. Also, if I actually want to message someone and have a chat with someone there's no way to do it besides randomly commenting on a post publicly for all to see and most likely about a topic that's completely unrelated to the post.

I hear people often say Steemit is a cross between Reddit and Medium, and I've even parroted that myself for a long time, but Steemit is nothing fucking like Reddit, Reddit has messaging, Reddit has a Q&A format that's really condusive to discussions and interaction, Steemit is nothing at all like Reddit. That's not necessarily good or bad its just not. Steemit is like a Blogger or a Medium.

I guess my point is this. If content isn't the focus here and if content isn't rewarded we shouldn't have a layout and interface that's completely content centric.

What the fuck's going on with the whole "groups" thing anyways? Is that ever gonna happen and what's it gonna look like?

Anyhow, that's my ramblings for the day. Take is as you will motherfuckers...

ps. I'm not angry I just find people really connect with posts when I call them motherfuckers at the end. Love y'all.

I can relate to most of your post.
I have always seen steem as the combination of blogger and facebook. The blogger aspect with writing post and facebook with the aspect of the easiness to reply and to upvote!
But I cannot categorize steem as a social media. On a social media platform there is interaction. Here on Steem the average number of comments is around 2.4! Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and sort a like are laughing their pants off!

The best thing about Steem is that I am able to read stories, opinion and ideas of people all over the world. This is the big difference with FB. On FB people do know each other in real life before they follow each other, here I don't know anybody I follow in real life!
Never thought that I would have so many connections in Eastern Europe!

So, yes there are good things about Steem, but let's not call it a social media platform. It is more a social experiment which has been undermind by the greed of people!

Cheers,
Peter

@rulesforrebels Great observations. When I first joined, the first thing I noticed was how long the blog posts were. :-) I had been out of writing for some time. I love writing, but do not always have the time it takes to write them. Enter DLive and Steepshot. :-) Then, esp. this year, I noticed that people who had networked or gotten noticed by by other influencers did pretty well. So I totally see that. Hopefully the communities will happen soon. We Will see.

Discord is a complicated and bewildering mess. This is neither social network nor blogging platform and proper engagement, and thus relationship incubator, is never going to happen.
The blockchain itself is excellent. The ability to use it effectively isnt.
Great article my friend.

Idk.. maybe I missed the point here but this seemed like pretty decent content to me.. better than most of mine.

I guess what Im getting at is Steemits layout, interface and how its setup is condusive to content more so than interaction, however on this platform content doesnt get you ahead relationships and networking do, but the platform itself doesnt have messaging, groups or really anything condusive to networking, relationship building and discussions except the comment section
