Duccio (full name - Duccio di Buoninsegna, 1255 - 1319) is considered one of the most prominent Italian painters of the turn of the 13th-14th centuries, the ancestor of the Sienese Gothic.

He was born in Siena, where he was formed as an artist, perhaps experiencing some influence of Cimabue, as evidenced by his Madonna Rucellai, written in 1285 (the Uffizi Gallery, Florence).

In the London National Gallery, Ducho's works are stored from his large altar composition Maestus (the virginity of the Virgin Mary with the Child), which he painted for the main altar of the Cathedral of Siena in 1308-1311, now among the masterpieces of Italian painting.
