Battles in History that changed the Future. Part 3.
Gettysburg. 1863.
A turning point came to pass in the American Civil War. The bloody battle lasted for two days. On day 3 the South launched an enormous attack, this is known as Pickett's charge. The Union positions on Cemetery Ridge were charged by 1500 men. Hand-to-hand fighting ensued. The Confederates had to retreat. Outcome : The withdrawal of Lee, who lost a 3rd of his army. Hope for victory in the North was lost.
Sedan: 1870.
This battle provided a fateful change in history. The Prussians trapped Napoleon III and his army. The victory ensured the unification of Germany. Napoleon was totally overthrown. Outcome : The balance of power was changed by a powerful German Empire. Germany and France remained enemies. This helped to push the world into WW1.
First Marne: 1914.
The Germans seemed unbeatable as WW1 commenced. Belgium and France were overrun. They were threatening Paris after 31 days. Counterattack by France turned out to be a great emergency. In was so important, that taxicabs were used to get troops to the front lines. Outcome : Paris was safe as the German attack was stopped.

Stalingrad : 1942 - 1943.
This battle was the turning point in WW2. Russia stopped the advance of Germany, at the same time turning back. For 6 months they were engaged in battle. More Russian troops were deployed and, what was left of the German army was trapped. Outcome ; This was to help in stopping WW2.
Normandy: 1944.
At this time Europe was ruled by the Nazi's. The Allied invasion was eagerly waiting for. On June 6th, the largest ever military force were sent to Europe. The soldiers stormed the Normandy beach wave after wave, under incredibly heavy fire. They were in a bloodbattle for a day. The Allies at last managed to establish a beachhead. Outcome : The allies poured into Europe taking all that Germany stole back. The invasion was a great success.

The landing of the US forces was a turning point in the Korean War. The UN forces supported the US attempt with Air and sea attacks. The US attacked the communist North from front and rear. Outcome : The victory enabled the UN forces to regain control in South Korea.

Love your posts -These wars each in their own way set the tone for the next period in history and ultimately gave rise to the next war...
History also repeats itself and we never seem to learn. Napoleon decides to attack Russia and is beaten by the winter conditions. The same happens when Germany invades Russia during WW2.

IN the civil war, I cannot imagine how it must feel to face your enemy head-on, load and fire and whoever gets hit first is the loser.
It's rediculous. War has been with us from the beginning of time and I can't imagine that it will stop. I live in SA and the country is at war with itself. The crime is outrageous. Not just robbery, but murder and torture.
But you are also from this amazing SA. What more can I say?
