Wild Garlic

enter image description here

The scientific name of the wild garlic is Tulbaghia violacea. The plant has beautiful purple / pink flowers, and grows to approximately 0.5 m tall. The name comes from the strong garlic smell that is given when the leaves are bruised. The plant can tolerate droughts and grows easily and have beautiful flowers.

The plant's flowers and leaves can be used in salads. The crushed leaves can be used to cure sinus headaches, colds and coughs. The smell of the leaves repels mosquitoes, when crushed on the skin. The plant also repels moles and snakes from the garden.

I have never used the plants for all the above uses (Perhaps I should try it), I just love the color it gives to the garden.

All photos above were taken by myself, with my iPhone.

Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed it.

Where are you? Wild garlic here in Ireland and Britain is completely different.

Hi @martinmooney

I am in South Africa. Do you have a picture of your wild garlic? I would like to see it. You can follow the ling Wild garlic to read more on the South African version.

Thank you for reading and commenting.

Really interesting!

So - the white-flowered plant with the sword-shaped deep green leaves is wild garlic Allium ursinum – known as ramsons, buckrams, wild garlic, broad-leaved garlic, wood garlic, bear leek, or bear's garlic – is a wild relative of chives native to Europe and Asia.

There's a useful wikipedia article but the photos below are from my garden.

That is very interesting, they look completely different from our wild garlic, but they also have beautiful flowers. I will go and read the article wikipedia
