Maintaining A Focused Approach In The Pursuit Of Your Ideas And Goals
It is true that everyone has a goal, idea or at least, something that they want to achieve. However, it is not everyone who has created a dream ends up achieving it. Part of the reasons behind this is lack of focus on what one plans to do. I remember what one of my teachers used to say in class when we were in junior high school. He normally said "it is either you give your undivided attention to this lesson or you will not learn anything from it." This was when I discovered that focus is very crucial in order to achieve one's desired goals. It is not all about having a goal, but how committed and focused are you to pursue it to the end?
In the world we find ourselves in at this present moment, so many distractions have arisen; from social media, to friends and family, to neighbourhood, to a whole lots of things. These distractions have swayed many off the right path and they now place less emphasis on their goals and visions. I was having a discussion with one of my friends and during the discussion, I asked her where she sees herself in the next 2 years. Sadly, she could not provide a very definitive and convincing answer to it. In her mind, she thought that 2 years is too small to make a big difference in her life, and she thought she has all the time in the world without realising that valuable moments pass by everytime.
What surprised me more was that, before now, she used to talk about her dreams of becoming an engineer. She fantasizes of being an engineer so as to take after her father who is a civil and highway engineer. Sadly, at this time, after finishing from secondary school for about 3 years, she had not written the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination which should enable her to gain entrance into the university to pursue after her dream career. Many things distracted her from the pursuit of her career. I tried talking to her to help her see reasons why she should realign with her dreams and focus on it, and hope she listens. You have to know that your dream will not be actualized without you doing anything, neither will it fulfil itself. To see your dreams become reality, you need to stay on the right course with it.
At the basis of every great achievement is someone that has put conscious effort to create an idea or a dream. But much more than that, it is someone that has resolved within themself to pursue after the dream with singleness of purpose. Your dream may look too ordinary and common, but it is your execution and how you are committed to it that will put the extra to it. A lot of people have had much bigger dreams but end up not achieving them because they lacked the focus to keep at it. Whereas, some others have turned seemingly normal dreams into extraordinary results by staying on the right course with determination and commitment. In life, focus is a very vital requirement to fulfilling one's dreams.
It is true that many things will want to divide your attention, while some others will come to discourage you, but you should maintain your focus. You may have tried initially without a satisfactory result, but it does not mean that you should give up on trying. Failure is not meant to make you lose focus but to make you put in more efforts towards what you want to achieve. That you could not get the result at the first attempt does not mean you should abandon your dream, rather it calls for a more focused approach. As long as you are unwilling to quit, then there are still possibilities of your dreams being fulfilled.
Life will not promise you a hitch-free ride; there will definitely be challenges, and sometimes, chaos, but it should not distract you from what you want to achieve. Always have in mind that where you are going is much more important than the challenges of the present moment, so keep your mind focused on the intended destination and not on the present challenges.
