There are many things that define who we are as human beings. Even though each of us is unique, these are things that are common to all of us. We all have dreams, aspirations, goals, hopes and so on.

To a large extent, it is these things that influence our life decisions and the general direction we take. The journey we embark upon, as a result, determines every little aspect of our lives.

But many times, we might end up regretting our decisions later on. How many times has it happened to you that you chose something, achieved it, but then had a feeling that you didn't really want it?

A lot of times we only think that we want something because of our emotions but later regret it. So, how do you decide upon something that will be worth a lot to you?

Will It Matter In The Future?

In a way, the question is answered upon its asking. How do you know whether you won't regret taking a decision in the future? Well, ask yourself whether it will still mean to you as much as it does today in the future.

Look past short term desires and needs and focus on what will make you feel fulfilled 20 years down the road or 30 years down the road. Set your goals that will still make you feel proud of having achieved them even on your death bed.

Of course, it might still take some time for you to arrive at these goals. You might have to steer off into the wrong direction for a bit to discover your way back in the right direction. But that is ok, as long as you find the right way.

In fact, knowing what you don't want should be a part of the overall journey. It brings clarity and maturity and makes you want to go full force ahead towards the thing that you actually want.

So, know what you want, even after some trial and error, and make sure it will mean a lot to you in the future and go get it. That, I think is the perfect way to live a contented life.
