Towns Of Australia - #2 – Sheffield, Tasmania – The Town of Murals
Sheffield, Tasmania
In Tasmania there is a little town in the North-West of the state called Sheffield. This scenic little town at the foothills of Mt Roland was settled in 1859 and is well known as an agricultural hub for the area.

The Town of Murals
In 1973, the town began to decline so, to reinvigorate the town's appeal as a tourist destination, the local tourism corporation advertised Sheffield as the 'Town of Murals'.
The first town mural was painted in December 1986 and since then over 60 murals depicting the area's rich history and beautiful natural scenery have been painted on walls throughout the town and buildings along the roadside. The murals attract an estimated 200,000 people to the town annually.
On a visit to the town in 2016, I took images of some of the creative artwork found throughout the town.
The International Mural Fest art competition, implemented in 2003, is held annually and occurs in April each year.
If you are ever in the area, take an hour or so to visit the town, have a coffee and check out the artistry on display.
