To procrastinate in a very simple explanation means to postpone, delay, defer or adjourn. It maybe idiomatically be presented as "putting an action on ice" or "putting off an action ". It is the tendency of performing less urgent task in preference to more urgent ones.
There are certain factors that contribute to procrastination. The most prominent among them is "the pleasure principle ". According to Freudian Psychology, pleasure principle is the instinctual seeking of pleasure and avoiding pain in order to satisfy biological and psychological needs (synder,147). While prioritising activities in today's society, pleasure seems to occupy the top position. This has hampered quite a number of innovations and talents. People tend to prefer more pleasurable task to less pleasurable ones thus, delaying and impeding the less pleasurable task to a later date.
To add to that, modernism has also contributed immensely to the act of procrastination. This has imbedded laziness into the blood stream of the people. It has also contributed to the decadence of some of the ethical values especially the value of the dignity of human Labour. The human labour to an extent has been downplayed, lukewarm attitudes now sets in.
The excesses of procrastination can be reduced if the services of counselors are employed to educate people on the value of time and the danger its post to the future.
Moreso, to cub this endemic act people should adopt the "temporal motivation theory" as postulated by Schmidt, Dolis and Tolli, which according to them, may help further the understanding of the impact of time and particularly deadlines on dynamic attention allocation (Schmidt, et al, 692-709). The temporal motivation theory formula can be applied to procrastination and to goal setting.
Finally, procrastination is a problem posted by the human physche. As such, a psychological approach is required. The services of a counselor can not be undermined. I have this philosophy that "tomorrow in life is a statement of probability, it's a risk not worth taking. Always make it now".
