Uncut Gems (Rough Diamonds in Italy) is a 2019 film by Josh and Benny Safdie.
We have Netflix to thank for the distribution.
It's one of those cases where Netflix is to be rewarded and thanked, with no ifs and buts.
Without Netflix we would have missed this real gem.
Absolute Player is an unexpected Adam Sandler, his failure to be nominated for the 2020 Oscars is and will remain a glorious mystery.
The film is set in New York and tells us about the race against time of a rich but up to his neck in debt jeweller who has only a few days, a few hours before paying off a big debt with a gang of Jews he knows.
The film's rhythm is very tight, the dialogue claustrophobic, the atmosphere dynamic but nuanced, almost as if there were a veil of smoke enveloping the film.
But Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler) has a plan, a plan that would be perfect if only Howard wasn't so obsessed and chaotic.
Obsessed with leading a life on the edge, made up of gambling, passions, drives that keep him halfway between a life of morality and a life as a golden bachelor.
So he divides his time between lover and family and soon finds out who he really wants to spend the rest of his days with.
But Howard's fall is inexorable, even if never taken for granted.
Kevin Garnett, the NBA player himself, is the absolute protagonist of this film, both in terms of minutes and importance.
Around him and a rough diamond, an opal, is articulated the whole story, Howard's luck or misfortune.
Even Garnett is driven by an obsession, almost mystical, with that gem.
Howard sees the light at the end of the tunnel but continues to risk it, exaggeratedly.
The film travels on a track of madness and obsession but somehow manages to empathize with Howard.
It's a miracle of scriptwriting, of character development, because Howard is a man we would never root for.
The powerful ending is just the cherry on top of a beautiful film, not to be overlooked.

E' uno di quei casi in cui Netflix è da premiare e ringraziare, senza se e senza ma.
Senza Netflix ci saremmo persi questo autentico gioiello.
Mattatore assoluto è un inaspettato Adam Sandler, la sua mancata nomination agli Oscar 2020 è e resterà un mistero glorioso.
Il film è ambientato a New York e ci racconta la corsa contro il tempo di un gioielliere ricco ma indebitato fino al collo che ha pochi giorni, poche ore prima di saldare un grosso debito con una banda di ebrei di sua conoscenza.
Il ritmo del film è serratissimo, i dialoghi claustrofobici, l'atmosfera dinamica ma sfumata, quasi come se ci fosse un velo di fumo ad avvolgere la pellicola.
Howard Ratner (Adam Sandler) ha però un piano, un piano che sarebbe perfetto se solo Howard non fosse cosi ossessionato e caotico.
Ossessionato dal condurre una vita al limite, fatta di gioco d'azzardo, passioni, pulsioni che lo tengono a metà fra una vita morigerata ed una vita da scapolo d'oro.
Si divide dunque tra amante e famiglia e presto scoprirà davvero con chi voler trascorrere il resto dei suoi giorni.
Ma la caduta di Howard è inesorabile seppure mai scontata.
Kevin Garnett, si proprio lui il giocatore della NBA, è assoluto protagonista di questo film, sia in termini di minutaggio che di importanza.
Intorno a lui e ad un diamante grezzo, un opale, si articola tutta la storia, la fortuna o sfortuna di Howard.
Anche Garnett è guidato da un'ossessione, quasi mistica, per quella gemma.
Howard vede la luce in fondo al tunnel ma continua a rischiare, esageratamente.
Il film viaggia su un binario di follia e ossessione ma riesce in qualche modo a farci empatizzare con Howard.
E' un miracolo di sceneggiatura, di sviluppo del personaggio, poichè Howard è un uomo per cui non tiferemmo mai.
Il finale potentissimo è solo la ciliegina di un film bellissimo, da non trascurare.
