Amateur Adventures at Home #10: It's a STAY-CATION! Part 1 - What to do?

Hey Steemians,

It's been a few days since posting as @cryptoandzen and I have been trying to get lots done so we can enjoy a little bit of RnR on our time off.

As we only have a week and some of that is tied up with adulting (ie things we have to do cause we committed to them), we decided it was time for a Staycation. So this week is going to be filled with doing holiday stuff around the beautiful bit of coast we live on.

I'm sure most of you have heard of a staycation.. but just in case you haven't it's when you have a holiday at home.

Wikipedia (it's on the internet so it must be right..and true...) defines a staycation thus:

A staycation (a portmanteau of "stay" and "vacation"), also known as a holistay (a portmanteau of "holiday" and "stay")[citation needed], is a period in which an individual or family stays home and participates in leisure activities within driving distance, sleeping in their own beds at night. They might make day trips to local tourist sites, swimming venues, or engage in fun activities such as horseback riding, paintball, hiking or visiting museums. Most of the time it involves dining out more frequently than usual.

Well so far I think we are totally nailing the eating out more than usual! The museum - not so much!

Things to Do

Staycations have become pretty popular since the recession, but you have to not fall into the trap of thinking you are at home and doing all your typical at home stuff. You have to really pretend you have gone away and are staying in someone's lovely house on AirBnB - (and they amazingly have the same taste in furniture as you).

After a bit of Google research - here are some of the things you should consider doing on a staycation

  1. Visit a Museum (what is it with the museums!)
  2. Get the Bike Out
  3. Go to a Movie
  4. See a Show
  5. Go Shopping
  6. Take a Nap (Yes we are also nailing this one!)
  7. Take a day cruise
  8. Work on your Tennis (or Golf) game
  9. Take a Hike
  10. Have a party
  11. Watch the cricket (or baseball if you are from the US)
  12. Spend time with the family
  13. Go Fishing
  14. Do Some Exercise

In fact Staycation is such a thing now that one of the big hotels near us - Crown Plaza Terrigal - offers locals a Summer Staycation deal (Mind you most locals know to go nowhere near Terrigal in summer holidays!)

What's to like

  • There is no wasted travel day on the front and end of a vacation -- two more days of fun!
  • No travel means no physical drain. Let’s admit it, travel is exhausting.
  • You don’t have to spend your vacation with strangers, either on flights or in hotels.
  • If the weather is bad, it doesn't really matter? Easy and cheaper to adjust plans
  • Your vacation can’t be cancelled by an airline or other travel situation
  • You get to see where you live from a new perspective

It's not a holiday without a Seafood Platter

What's to hate

  • You can get caught in your normal non-holiday daily routine - like doing chores
  • You may miss the opportunity to see new places, meet new people and try new food
  • You can end up wasting time as the urgency to get out and see / do something never seems as great
  • You run into people you know
  • No one at a BBQ (or dinner party) is interested in what you did the week you stayed home - as opposed to what you did the week you spent avoiding election riots in Egypt)

A good book and a good wine

The NSW Central Coast is one of the most gorgeous spots along the Australian East Coast - so much to do and just the right distance out of the city to feel like you are getting away but close enough to immerse yourself in everything a global city has to offer. I am always grateful for how lucky we are to live here.

We have lots of things planned - hikes, breakfasts at cafes, fishing, brunches at cafes, movies, lunches at cafes, paddle-boarding, dinner at restaurants, celebrating public holidays, BBQs at friends, exploring the city, drinks on the harbour.... I think you get the picture lol!
