The Lijiang ancient town
The Lijiang ancient town is a prime example of local history and heritage. The buildings are preserved from the Qing and Ming dynasties and are carefully kept to their original standard whilst making use of them as living quarters or shop fronts.
Winding in and out of the streets are small streams of water which were once used for transportation of food and supplies between different parts of the city. Today, most of the town has pavements and any building is accessible by land.
The architecture of the buildings are a special homage to the great Qing empire and exemplifies the advanced Chinese concept of architecture with its draping but finely detailed rooftops made from locally sourced
terracotta.
It is a quiet town and the residents prefer living a slow but relaxing life. There is no sense of urgency here, and people are friendly. The best activity in a beautiful afternoon is to have some Puer Chinese tea whilst enjoying the quiet ambience of the town.
