Happy World Coin Wednesday, stackers!

This article series highlights the old circulating coins from Vatican City that depicts the Four Cardinal Virtues. I've previously shown three coins depicting cardinal virtues:

• Coins of Cardinal Virtues Part 3: FORTITUDE

  Fortitude, which ensures firmness in difficulties and constancy in the pursuit of the good.

• Coins of Cardinal Virtues Part 2: JUSTICE

  Justice, which consists in the firm and constant will to give others their due.

• Coins of Cardinal Virtues Part 1: PRUDENCE.

  Prudence, which disposes the practical reason to discern in every circumstance one's true good and to choose the right means of achieving it.

Today, we will look at a Vatican City coin that depicts the cardinal virtue TEMPERANCE, which moderates the attraction of the pleasures of the senses and provide balance in the use of created foods.

Temperance is the espousal of moderation, marked by personal restraint. It has been studied by religious thinkers and philosophers.

Upheld as virtue throughout time and across cultures, it was one of the cardinal virtues in Greek philosophy, being believed that no virtue could be sustained in the face of inability to control oneself. It was incorporated in the Catholic catechism's Cardinal Virtues.

Temperance is generally defined by control over excess, so that it has many such classes, such as abstinence, chastity, modesty, humility, prudence, self-regulation, forgiveness and mercy; each of these involves restraining some impulse, such as sexual desire, vanity, or anger.

Obverse: The Coat of Arms of Pope Pius XII after his election. Pope Pius XII (Eugenio Pacelli 1939-1958) coat-of-arms depicted a dove with folded wings and sits perched on the trimount and above waves of water. The dove is holding an olive branch in its beak. This is a reference to the name Pacelli which means “peace”. Papal coat-of-arms depicts the crossed keys joined by cord and tassels, beneath the Papal Tiara (Triregnum).
