Ficus Benjamina, is an ornamental tree, commonly called in the same way, Boxwood or Laurel of India in Costa Rica, Amate in Mexico, and in South America it is known as Caucho Benjamina or Matapalo.

It is a fig tree native to South and Southeast Asia, and South and North Australia. It is the official tree of Bangkok, Thailand.

It reaches 15 meters in height in natural conditions, with graceful pendulous branches and leaves 6 to 13 cm long, oval with pointed tips. In its native range, its small fruits are a favorite food of several birds.

In Colombia, this species is prohibited for planting in urban spaces, due to the great development of its root system that seriously affects the sewer pipes, causing clogging and the consequent expense in changing and repairing the drainage systems.
