Is there someone watching over me? ... at Morrisons - A True Story

While heading to Tesco for some food this evening, I looked down and found a one-pound coin and twenty pence on the ground. It's not going to pay off the mortage but I can't complain?

This got me thinking of a particular incident several years before when I was in another supermarket, Morrison's and lost £40 on account of my own stupidity. The self-service checkouts ask you if you would like some cashback?

Yes please, I'll take £40.

I then go and leave it in the tray, walk away and drive off only realising several hours later my mistake. I think we've all done it at some point in time but more likely at an ATM.

Not a lot of point going back; people just don't hand in money.

So fast forward one year. I'm in a different Morrison's, at a self-service checkout again and notice something in the cash tray, £20! There's not a soul around, even the cashier who looks after the twelve or so self-service units is distracted somewhere. I feel this is justice and quickly pocket the £20. That's 50% of my loss recouped.

Six months later I'm in the same Morrison's that yielded me half of my loss. I'm walking down the aisles which are quite empty and what's do I see? Two £10 notes!

I check to find nobody around and pocket the notes feeling a little guilty but somehow justified again. That's my £40 back where it belongs!

So what of the moral's of this story? If this was a wallet, a watch, some jewelry then I would have handed it in. These are personal items and I feel I'm quite a moral person.

But cash? If I hand this in, it's likely going into someone else's pocket and probably not the right one.

What would you have done?

On a philosophical note, why did I lose £40 at Morrison's only to find £40 at Morrison's? Is this really coincidence?

It's all a bit weird!

I found a wallet once with £300 cash and a debit card/credit card etc. I rung the bank and told them that id found a wallet and gave card number/person's name etc. .. no response. After 2 days I rang the bank again giving the same details and also my mobile number - again, .. still no response, .. so without guilt, I pocketed the £300 and set fire to the wallet and card. .. the end.

Fair enough, you did try.. and a CC card would be a different matter than cash.

Finders keepers losers weepers.

I'm glad the universe has seen fit to finally reimburse you.

Damn right it should!

Actually I do know of people handing in money, but I also know of some finding money on an unattended ATM and keeping it. Cash is hard to trace or prove ownership of. Not sure I have ever found more than just the odd coin. Obviously you hang around Morrisons too much and people there are careless with their cash.

Obviously you hang around Morrisons too much

Not so much now, whichever is closer I visit and get my stuff. I'm willing to bet you remember this one first time around!

hats it, it's Morrisons for me from now on! :OD

Mixed blessings there, the gods kept my cash for 2 years with no interest!
