Back To Basics with SEO
Getting the Foundations Done.
Before beginning to work on your Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) for your website, it is important to have some foundations in place. One important and key aspect, (pardon the pun) is to ensure that keyword and key phrases research is carried out. This will determine what you want to rank for based on what your potential customers and clients are searching for, the strength of competition and based on this the content that is to go on your website.
Proper Keyword Research
This should NEVER be guessed, you need to carry out due diligence and if it is something you are unfamiliar with, I strongly recommend hiring an expert, guessing what they should be is a definite no go and can be a very expensive and/or time consuming exercise to put right. Sadly nine out of ten websites we deal with have gone ahead, had a website designed and built without this. They then realise they are getting little or no traffic and then hire someone to fix it, not something that is an easy task as it pretty much means re-writing and structuring EVERY web page to include them.
So, the following basics only apply if you have have carried out proper keyword research using tools such as Google Adwords Tools.
Each page of your site should have unique keywords and/or key phrases, below are the basics to be implemented to each individual web page.
TITLE.
Make sure your best keyword is included in the meta title
HEADER.
Make sure your best keyword is included in your H1 Header (This is the main title on each page.)
Description.
Include your best keywords in the meta description of your web page. Also aim to have a compelling description with a good call to action.
Content
Your content should include your best keywords and have have a density of around 2%. Each page should have a minimum word count of 350+ words.
Images
Not only ensure that the alt descriptions include your keyword, but also rename the image as your best keywords.
Fresh Content
Consider adding a blog or newsletter to your site, and posting regularily. These articles again should be over a 350 word count and written based around your keywords.
The above are only the basics for Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and literally the tip of the iceberg, having these in place will mean you will have a good foundation to further improve your search engine rankings and move forward with your SEO.
