As-Salamu Alaykum (Peace Be Upon You)

Today I am going to share my experience of visiting Baitul Mukarram National Mosque, the National Mosque of Bangladesh. It is one of the most important religious landmarks in the country and is located in the heart of Dhaka, between Paltan and Gulistan. Inspired by the Holy Kaaba in Makkah, this magnificent mosque has a unique square-shaped architecture that makes it different from traditional mosque designs.

I do not visit Dhaka very often, and even when I do, I usually do not get the opportunity to visit this mosque because my destination is often far from the area or I do not have enough time. However, by the mercy of Almighty Allah, I had the opportunity to visit this beautiful mosque a few days ago. It was a memorable experience that allowed me to admire its remarkable architecture and peaceful environment.

Location & Accessibility

Baitul Mukarram National Mosque is located at Paltan, Dhaka-1000, Bangladesh, approximately 2.2 km from Kamalapur Railway Station.

The mosque is very easy to reach. Visitors can travel by bus, CNG, auto-rickshaw, motorcycle, ride-sharing services, or private car. Local buses are the most affordable option, while CNGs and ride-sharing services are more convenient but comparatively expensive.

Since the mosque is situated in the commercial center of Dhaka, transportation is available throughout the day.

History & Significance

The construction of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque began in 1960 under the initiative of Abdul Latif Bawany. The first congregational prayer was held on 25 January 1963, and the entire mosque complex was completed in 1968.

Unlike most traditional mosques, Baitul Mukarram does not have a large central dome. Instead, its main prayer hall was designed in the shape of the Holy Kaaba, making it one of the most unique mosques in the Islamic world.

Today, it serves as the National Mosque of Bangladesh and can accommodate nearly 40,000 worshippers at the same time.

Natural Beauty, Environment & Overall Atmosphere

One of the things that impressed me the most was the clean and peaceful environment of the mosque. Although it is located in one of the busiest areas of Dhaka, stepping inside immediately creates a sense of calmness.

The white marble flooring inside the prayer hall, along with ceramic tiles and mosaic stones in the courtyard, gives the mosque a bright and elegant appearance.

A small tree is planted in a large concrete planter located in the center of the tiled courtyard.
The scene features a central raised planter filled with various plants and small trees

There are also decorative flower pots and greenery in different areas, adding freshness to the surroundings. For me, this mosque is one of the best places in Dhaka to escape the city's noise and spend some peaceful moments in worship.

Architecture, Sightseeing Attractions & Notable Features

The most attractive feature of the mosque is its Kaaba-inspired square-shaped architecture. This unique design makes it instantly recognizable among mosques around the world.

Inside the mosque, visitors can admire beautiful Islamic calligraphy, geometric patterns, spacious prayer halls, wide corridors, and elegant marble finishes. The large open courtyard and the massive prayer hall create an impressive atmosphere for worshippers.

Photography enthusiasts will also appreciate the symmetry of the building, especially the exterior, courtyard, and Kaaba-style structure.

My Personal Experience & Feelings

Visiting Baitul Mukarram National Mosque was truly a wonderful experience for me. Since I rarely visit Dhaka, getting the opportunity to pray and explore the National Mosque felt very special.

I spent some time observing the beautiful architecture and the peaceful atmosphere. The cleanliness, discipline, and spiritual environment made me feel relaxed and grateful. I sincerely thank Almighty Allah for giving me the opportunity to visit this sacred place.

Cleanliness, Safety & Visitor Facilities

One thing that impressed me the most was the cleanliness of the mosque. The prayer halls, courtyard, and ablution areas were all well maintained. The authorities take good care of the entire complex, making it comfortable for thousands of worshippers every day. Visitors can use the spacious ablution facilities before prayers.

There is also a library inside the mosque for those interested in Islamic books and knowledge. Since the mosque is located in one of the busiest commercial areas of Dhaka, security inside the mosque is generally good. However, visitors should remain careful while walking through the crowded market outside the mosque and keep an eye on their personal belongings.

Entry Fee, Opening Hours & Essential Information

  • Entry Fee: Free
  • Opening Hours: Open daily for all five daily prayers
  • Prayer Capacity: Approximately 40,000 worshippers
  • Best Time to Visit: Early morning or before Maghrib prayer.

Photography & Video Recording Opportunities

One thing I really liked about Baitul Mukarram National Mosque is that there are many beautiful places for photography. The unique cube-shaped architecture inspired by the Holy Kaaba looks attractive from every angle. The spacious courtyard, elegant white marble floor, decorative arches, and peaceful surroundings provide excellent opportunities for photography.

Visitors can also record short videos outside the mosque to capture its impressive architecture and the surrounding environment. However, while recording inside the prayer hall, everyone should respect the worshippers and avoid disturbing anyone during prayer times.

Suitable for Family, Friends & Children

I believe this mosque is an ideal place to visit with family, friends, or relatives. Besides offering prayers together, visitors can also admire the beautiful architecture and learn about one of Bangladesh's most important religious landmarks.

Children can also learn about the significance of the National Mosque and experience the peaceful Islamic environment. However, parents should ensure that children maintain proper manners inside the mosque.

Travel Tips & Precautions

  • Visit outside the busiest prayer times if you want to explore comfortably.

  • Keep your personal belongings safe while walking through the nearby market because the area is often crowded.

  • Dress modestly and follow mosque etiquette.

  • Remove your shoes before entering the prayer area and keep them in the designated place.

  • Maintain silence inside the mosque and avoid disturbing worshippers.

  • Carry a water bottle during hot weather.

  • If you plan to take photographs, do so respectfully without interrupting people who are praying.

My Rating (9.8/10)

After considering the architecture, cleanliness, accessibility, peaceful environment, and visitor facilities, I would like to give this place 9.8/10.

Reasons:

  • Outstanding and unique Kaaba-inspired architecture.
  • Peaceful prayer environment despite being located in the heart of Dhaka.
  • Excellent cleanliness and maintenance.
  • Easy transportation.
  • Free entry for everyone.
  • Spacious prayer facilities.

I deducted only 0.2 points because the surrounding commercial area can become extremely crowded during busy hours.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Baitul Mukarram National Mosque is not only the National Mosque of Bangladesh but also one of the country's most significant religious and architectural landmarks.

Whether you are interested in Islamic architecture, photography, history, or simply looking for a peaceful place to pray, I highly recommend visiting this mosque at least once. I believe every Muslim visiting Dhaka should experience the beauty and serenity of this magnificent mosque.

I got a very good idea from reading the details of your travel experience at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. I visited it once, but due to a lack of time, I could not see everything properly. Despite being located between Paltan and Gulistan, two of Dhaka's busiest areas, the calm and serene atmosphere inside is truly admirable. The description you have given in the post of the square architecture of the mosque, modelled after the Kaaba Sharif, is particularly eye-catching. Especially, despite the lack of a dome, the use of calligraphy and geometric designs on the inner walls and the modern roof plan to let in daylight are great. I think it is quite challenging to maintain such a large and orderly religious establishment right in the heart of a busy commercial area, which is being managed quite well by the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh. I think it will work as a complete guide for any new visitor, as it mentions civic amenities like the library and ablution facilities inside the mosque. Best wishes to you in this contest. 😊

Mashallah, I visited a very well-known and interesting place that I visit every week. You have beautifully captured the design of the front of this particular Baitul Mukarram Mosque, which is spread over a large circular area. Moreover, the beautiful description of each picture and the design of the interior, as well as the clean and tidy ablution area with natural plants arranged in tubs. The interior of the mosque is air-conditioned, which is really comfortable and a place of appreciation for going to the Creator. Thank you for sharing your beautiful skills with this particular mosque. Of course, we can meet someday.
