Beetroot! An hidden treasure

in #health7 years ago (edited)

Hi steemians, I have not been able to post because of school but after learning about beetroot, I couldn't bring myself not to share it.

Definition
Beetroot means the taproot of beet plant. It contains vitamin c, minerals; calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, sodium, zinc, copper and selenium.

Importance

  1. Due to the high nitrate level in Beetroot, the juice is used to lower blood pressure and it makes the heart healthy.

  2. It helps to reduce constipation and aids digestion as its fibre content is high

  3. The chlorine in beetroot helps muscle movement, reduce chronic inflammation, aids in transmitting impulses and memory

  4. Beetroots contains alpha-lipoic acid, which help to lower glucose level, increase insulin sensitivity and prevent oxidative stress-induced changes in patients with diabetes.

  5. It improves muscle oxygenation during exercise thereby increasing the performance of athletics.

Side Effects

  • Consuming Beetroot juice everyday can cause kidney stones because Beetroot contains oxalate which when combined with calcium cause kidney stone.

  • Beetroot contains high nitrate which is not good for a pregnant woman.

  • Beetroot is rich in iron, magnesium, copper, and phosphorous and that’s the good part. But the bad part is all of those are metals, and excessive consumption of these can lead to their accumulation in the liver, therefore, harming the liver and pancreas.

  • Too much Beetroot can cause bloating, cramping and changes in the bowel movement.

Always take something in moderation. As a kid this was advised by a medicinal doctor for me because I have had low blood counts and I was suffering from headaches constantly. Beetroot juice was what I drank then in addition to my meds. I believe this made a whole lot of difference because my symptoms went away. I don't know. Probably it was part of growing process too.

Thanks for sharing your experience

This looks delicious! My suggested beer pairing is a Weissbier. Try it out and let us know what you think!
