Gnat sized Wasp found in Bee homes

in #photography5 years ago (edited)

While opening the Bamboo Bee homes I came across a tiny predator. Well it cannot hurt me as far as I know, but they are destructive to Mason Bee cocoons. These tiny Wasps climb into the homes and take over cocoons which then kill the Mason Bee inside and Wasps emerge from the cocoon in the spring. I found a bunch of dead ones in the homes but this is the first live one I came across. I thought all the alive ones have left by now or got caught up in spider webs inside the box.

It must have come out to check out what the disturbance was as it was exposed to light opening the homes. I come across alot of damaged cocoons, maybe 10% or more were damaged and did not make it to the final drying process. When I soak the cocoons the ones with holes in them drop the bottom of the pool of water and are discarded.

In case I missed any I can expose the remaining cocoons to a "light screen" and see if there are any see through cocoons left. Usually Wasps are found inside, I can do that right after taking them out of the refrigerator.

I like the color on the Wasp, it has that metallic green coat to it. Too bad they try to damage the Bees, otherwise they I may like them more. Most Wasps can hurt me and I dont want to deal with but these little ones are so small I dont think they could do any damage to my human body. Though Ants are small too and it hurts getting stung by those so maybe I should still be careful around them.
